GAS HAND WAS ON 1/2 TANK THEN WENT TO FULL - 2007 Ford Edge SEL

Hello. You may have a problem with the fuel sending mechanism in your gas tank or you may have a fungus in your gas tank which is causing it to show much more fuel than you actually have. Drive to an AAMCO repair shop where they will scan your car's computer for free [some auto parts stores now offer this free as well so call around]. If it is mechanical it should show up on the scan, if not you probably have the gas fungus. Some auto parts stores and dealerships now sell an expensive gas tank additive that will kill that fungus. Regards, Joe

Some cars,if you put fuel in the tank while the car is running, the gas needle want show the right amount of gas until you cut the car off and then restart it.If it still on full and want move, you will need a fuel pump.

I saw this happen to an outboard motor of all things. The fuel pickup tube in the tank had a crack in it lengthwise letting air be sucked into the tube when there should only be gas. Try sucking through a straw with a split in the side and you'll see what I mean. If gas is covering the crack, no air leaks in but when the fuel level drops down to or below the crack it begins to run very badly. You must drop the tank (when empty) and replace the tube or the sending unit as an assembly.
