The washer was washing and when it was time to rinse and spin the machine just made a noise that sounded like gears trying to engage. The noise sounded like it was from the bottom of the machine. We got the water out because it would drain and we could put water back in so the motor is working. What do we do?

sounds to me that something is stuck in your pump check the pump if you open the pump have lots of towels on hand the machine will not spin if it does not drain

i had the same problem and agree that the lid switch is probably shot. Try putting some type of weight on the lid right over the switch when it gets to a spin cycle. If the machine starts spinning, that's the problem.

it sounds like your coupler is broken, with the machine unplugged and with help pull the washer out and then tilt it back. look between the motor and the transmition for a back disk sandwiched between 2 white disks. if it is gone then you need to replace the coupler. it is a medium difficulty job, you need to take the shell off in order to do the job.

check the lid switch on the washer its below where the tab on the washer lid that goes down in the body of the washer there two screws at the base of the control panel back these out and raise the panel you will see a connector coming from the washer disconnect it and put a jumper wire where it goes to the control panel turn it to spin pull out the knob if it spins replace the switch if it doesn't reply to me and we will go from there

I would consult the user manual first for the fault finding section from the manufacturers website, if its a whirlpool then that will need an engineer from them to come out eric

Hi Norm. Welcome to FixYa.
The first thing to check with the kind of symptoms your machine exhibits is the operation of the lid switch. Make sure that the pin/plunger on the lid itself has not broken off, and check the actuator lever on the switch itself. It is REALLY common on your model for the actuator arm to break off or crack, and this will cause no spin/no pump problems. Your machine is built by Whirlpool and the part number for the switch assembly is a 3849238. You can get it at any local whirlpool parts center in your area.

I hope you find this info helpful and thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Happy New Year from the FixYa crew!
